When first encountered, GSB062218-05 was hovering a few centimeters above rather open bottom at 45 feet with sand and scattered rocks and kelp stalks away from the main breeding aggregation, which was in dense kelp inshore, above a 30-foot bottom. The lighter bottom that the fish was occupying at the time could account for its lighter background shade.
